I’ve been a bad blogger. My lack of updates and overall neglect of the blog since mid-summer is inexcusable. I finally updated the theme, refreshed the links and added a news feed from Tampa Bay Tech Events iCal by @redheadjessica. I have not taken a complete hiatus from ranting or flinging poo, you can find most of my updates on Twitter or the LinkedIn Group – NextGen Tampa Bay – Economic Development for the Bay Area .
The Tampa region has come a long way in the past three years. The wide range of grass roots community events on the hook for 2011 is very impressive. However, we still have a long way to go and a lot of uphill battles to fight before we achieve the type of sustainable economic growth and reputation that will help make Tampa a competitive area for tech, life sciences, energy or other emerging business sectors. Over the past year, my rants have been significantly skewed toward the lack of leadership and wasteful spending on economic development efforts in the Tampa Bay region. As I kick-start 2011 with more frequent rants, I will attempt to balance the poo flinging ecodev rants with more grass roots community posts on local tech events, coworking and other startup friendly topics.

The next economic development disaster is brewing up in Tallahassee. FSU officials there have Incubator Envy and are hell bent on keeping up with the Joneses (Tampa, Boca Raton, Orlando, Gainesville, Sarasota, etc.). In the process, they no doubt will lobby for tens of millions of taxpayer dollars to put up a shiny new building and blow wads of cash on marketing a facility that will at best only benefit a small isolated slice of academia. I found this excellent open source as a business model rant on the Luminotes wiki. This is not the typical “everything should be digital and everything digital should be free” rant, instead the poster makes the argument that customers should pay for the VALUE derived from software and not simply ACCESS to software. This makes sense to me, afterall, what are your salespeople actually delivering, a license or a solution to a customer problem.
Simplicity wins… !!!

Congrats to Josh for his write up on Mashable. Josh did a rant on Twitter use and tracking at the recently completed and highly successful Tampa BarCamp. He made a great case for how better metrics can transform this emerging Web thingee into a usable community building communications platform.
This is nice recognition for this Tampa startup and the great tool Tweeple Twak for tracking metrics in your Twitter community.
