Commercial Real Estate Meets #Coworking

Thanks to Eric Odum of Net Lease Commercial RE for inviting me to join his monthly podcast to talk about the growth of tech start-ups and the impact on commercial real estate. Three years ago when we met, Coworking was not even on the radar for CRE & economic development. Now that small (& virtual) is the new big, government officials and business leaders are trying to understand what has happened to their traditional market for office space and how should they react. With most of economic development’s efforts focused on development and not economics, this has put a real crimp in many regions’ strategy for growth. Shovel-ready has been replaced by bandwidth and workforce-ready leaving many areas that are dependent on new construction wondering how they are going to recover from the current economic downturn.

In this video we talk about Coworking as an ideal option for start-ups that needs office space, but we also discuss how the trend toward smaller offices and a distributed workforce started back in the early ’90′s.

Tampa Bay Celebrates Jelly Week

Jelly? No, not the delicious breakfast condiment. Jelly is a term used to describe an adhoc gathering of people to work together under one roof. Jelly sessions are a type of coworking that encourages people to get out of their normal work environment and share their creative energy with the community.

Jelly Week is a worldwide effort to promote this type of collaborative work environment. The week of January 16th – 22nd has been designated as Jelly Week 2012 and there are currently over 170 registered events to mark this celebration, find one near you and join in the fun.

Tampa Bay is celebrating WW Jelly Week by sponsoring a day of open coworking on Wednesday January 18th co-hosted by Tampa Bay WaVE and IdeaField Coworking. If you are in the downtown area, ditch your normal office or coffee shop and join us for a much more energetic work environment. Come to collaborate with others in the tech community or just feel free to grab a chair, some coffee and some WiFi.

Starting at 1:00 we will host a Tech Rant. This is an open agenda round table discussion on tech in Central Florida – what’s working, what’s not.
